Stjepan Mesic says Croatia has “an important political task to address seriously” as a temporary UN SC member. In a statement, the Croatian president said that his country firmly intended to justify the role entrusted to it to confirm its worthiness as a nation which strongly adheres to the principles of the UN Charter. Mesic: Croatia ready to assume responsibilities Croatia will be a temporary Security Council member for the next two years and will chair the Anti-Terrorism Committee. “Insistence on the UN Charter is one of the strongest weapons for small countries such as Croatia,” said Mesic, stressing that it was a way of showing it had views, and that they should be insisted on. “In other words, we won’t and we mustn’t have double standards, particularly when it comes to problems such as development, or underdevelopment, terrorism and its root causes, climate change, human rights and international relations in a globalising world,” he added. The Croatian president said that his country would, at the same time, “be mindful of the common platform that the EU – which Croatia will join in the near future - will form on this or that issue, and, in so doing, will prove herself a deserving and trustworthy candidate for membership.” “In order to successfully carry out the responsible task that we assumed at the start of the year, I feel that it is essential that the stand Croatia is to take on every issue that comes before the Security Council, be discussed and coordinated between the constitutionally defined co-creators of our country’s foreign policy,” concluded Mesic.
