Serbia's rapid progress toward EU is more important than extradition of Hague indictees, Dimitrij Rupel says. The Slovenian foreign minister wrote, in a column published on his blog, that the European Union and the stabilization of the region are "more important than extraditions of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic to the Hague Tribunal." Slovenia: EU integration more important than Hague Croatian reactions to his commentary that Croatia and Serbia should have the same criteria for joining the EU are indicative of a shifting of attention from Croatia's obligations, Rupel alsowrote. The support to Serbia's speedier accession to the EU was met with unpleasant, and even insulting comments from Croatia, including those from Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Rupel said. Efforts are under way for Serbia to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement as soon as possible, regardless of its obligations toward the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, which it must naturally fulfill, he wrote. Rupel yesterday also answered criticisms of his statements made last week that the same criteria must be applied for both Croatia and Slovenia concerning their accession to the EU, because Croatia extradited General Ante Gotovina to the Hague Tribunal only after it signed the SAA with the EU.
