The Hague Tribunal president has complained to the UN about pressures from Croatia after the Vukovar Three verdict. Fausto Pocar has written to notify the court's founder, the United Nations, that the verdicts, sentencing two and setting a third former JNA officer free on charges of war crimes in Vukovar in 1991, prompted Zagreb to try and influence the Tribunal's independence. Hague tells UN Croatia is pressuring court A Zagreb daily says that Liam McDowel, a Hague spokesman, has confirmed the existence of the letter. He would not give any more details but said the contents will soon be made public in New York. Pocar will be in New York on October 15.to submit his regular report to the UN General Assembly. The Croatian press says that "Croatia does not face the danger of any sanctions being introduced against it." Croatia reacted with an uproar as the Hague passed the Vukovar Three ruling. Prime Minister Ivo Sanader sent a letter to Pocar and the UN complaining about the result of the Hague trial. Now, media speculate, Pocar wishes to protect the dignity of the court and to point out that Sanader's official complaints relate to a process that is legally still ongoing, therefore they could be interpreted as exerting pressure. Both the defense and the prosecution still have the right of appeal in the Vukovar Three case.
