More than 50 freighters are stranded in the Danube River near the Bulgarian town of Svishtov due to low waters, the lowest recorded in the past 250 years. The port of Svishtov cautioned that some vessels have been blocked for more than three months, adding that the low water level have also impeded the movement of small vessels, which can only sail with one third of cargo. According to eyewitnesses, the level of water has dropped to such an extent that people could cross the river from Bulgarian to Romanian shore on foot.

Sailors fear that low temperatures announced for the New Year's period could cause the Danube to freeze, which would literally block the sailing until spring.
