Croatia signed the Accession Treaty with the EU on Friday in Brussels. About a hundred citizens held a protest against the EU in downtown Zagreb on Friday. Croatia signs EU Accession Treaty European Council President Herman Van Rompuy addressed the present officials and said that this was a historic day both for Croatia and the EU. The Accession Treaty was signed by Croat President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor. Two documents were signed, the Accession Treaty and the Final Act - the final political document of the intergovernmental conference stating what was agreed during the talks. “This treaty represents the highlight of our international confirmation,” Kosor stressed. The Croat president said that the signing of the Accession Treaty was just as important as Croatia’s independence. He added that Croatia was the first country that had been through a war before joining the EU. “Croatia is not handing over its hard-won sovereignty to the Union, it’s investing it in the EU,” Josipovic said.
