Last prime minister of Yugoslavia dies

The last prime minister of the former Yugoslavia (SFRJ) Ante Markovic has passed away aged 88, according to media reports. Media in Serbia are quoting Sarajevo daily Dnevni Avaz, which based its report on "circles close to the Markovic family". Markovic was born in 1924 in Konjic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and was eductated in Dubrovnik and Zagreb, in Croatia. He was a pre-WW2 member of the Communist Party and joined its forces in 1941. From 1982, Markovic headed the Executive Council of the Croatian Assembly, and was twice elected to head the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Croatia. In 1986 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Alliance of Communists of Yugoslavia (SKJ), while three years later he was appointed president of the federal government (SIV). He was the author of a program of economic reforms that yielded short-lived results, increasing the standard of living in the country and curbing the inflation, which made him a popular politician. Faced with the opposition to his economic program coming from Serbia, and separatist activities of Croatia and Slovenia, Markovic was forced resign in late 1991, when Yugoslavia had already effectively broken up.
