Laying of wreaths and lighting of candles at a memorial for fallen Croat soldiers in Okucani today marked the 16th anniversary of Operation Flash. The attack in Western Slavonia in 1995 left more than 280 Serbs killed and about 15,000 expelled. Croatia pays tribute to "war veterans killed in Flash" Wreaths were also laid and candles lit by families of Croatian soldiers killed in the operation, and by delegations of the Croatian Parliament headed by Speaker Luka Bebic and of the government headed by the Minister of Croatian Veterans, Family and Inter-generational Solidarity Tomislav Ivic. On behalf of Croatian President and Supreme Commander of the armed forces Ivo Josipovic, a wreath was laid and candles were lit by the Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Drago Lovric, and tribute to the dead was also paid by delegations of the armed forces, police and Brod-Posavina County. Mass was served by Croatian Military Bishop Juraj Jezerinac, who said that the war had been imposed on Croatia. "Croatian defenders, led by Franjo Tudjman and the generals, managed to liberate not only this, but also other occupied areas, for which Croatia will be eternally grateful to them," Jezerinac noted. The Hague Tribunal last month found that Tudjman was part of a joint criminal enterprise set up to permanently and forcibly remove the Serb population from Croatia, and sent two former Croat generals to jail for war crimes committed during Operation Storm - which came several months after Operation Flash and targetted Serb areas in Krajina. In Serbia and the Serb republic (RS) in Bosnia, commemorations were held today to honor the civilian victims of the May 1995 attack.
