Four members of a criminal group were killed in a shootout with police officers in northern Macedonia. According to sources, the incident occurred on Tuesday night about 20 kilometers north of the capital of Skopje, near the villages of Radusa and Rasce. This is the second operation of the Macedonian police in the last ten days to seize smuggled weapons. In late April, police clashed with ethnic Albanian gangs from Kosovo, discovering a large cache of weapons. The identity of the arms smugglers that confronted police on this occasion has not been revealed. Macedonian Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska said that the security of the country was not at risk and that "police have control of the entire territory of Macedonia". The BBC reports that Radio Kosovo said three of the four have been identified, and that one was an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo, “while the others were Macedonian”. The report adds that it is not known if the group was connected to the “National Liberation Army”, described as a “former ethnic Albanian rebel group, which claimed responsibility for another shoot-out on 29 April in the border area”.
