LJUBLJANA --
The parties of the Slovenian ruling coalition have proposed a referendum for the arbitration agreement with Croatia.
It is expected that the parliament will announce the referendum for the second half of December, which is before its ratification would reach the parliamentary agenda. This is being supported by President Danilo Turk.
With this, the Slovenian government wants to encourage a public debate over the border arbitration deal "so that the Slovenian public could speak about any of its possible reservations with the agreement".
The ruling coalition believes that the agreement recently signed between the prime ministers of Slovenia and Croatia is a good one, and they believe that the citizens will confirm this in the referendum.
If the referendum fails, the government stated that it would "not insist on the agreement either".
The opposition stated that the referendum should obligate the parliament to do whatever the people believe is right, and that it should hold more weight than being just an advisory vote.
Opposition parties add that the referendum should have been announced before the arbitration agreement was signed in Stockholm.
