Wildfire wreaking havoc in Dalmatia

A state of emergency has been declared in the Makarska region of Croatia, while the town of Veliko Brdo has been evacuated.

A state of emergency has been declared in the Makarska region of Croatia, while the town of Veliko Brdo has been evacuated. Wildfires have been raging near the central Dalmatian town since Friday. Wildfire wreaking havoc in Dalmatia Veliko Brdo’s elderly have been evacuated, as have a number of inhabitants from the Zelenka district, as the fires are nearing their homes. According to the local fire brigade, no-one has been injured, nor have any homes or premises been destroyed for the time being. The Makarska Protection and Rescue Center declared a state of emergency after the fires began to spread again. 200 firemen are tackling the blaze, although rescue efforts have been hampered by a storm last night which grounded fire-fighting aircraft. The fire, suspected to have been caused by power cables short-circuiting, broke out on Friday evening, and spread quickly towards Biokovo, driven along by a powerful storm. The blaze briefly threatened several houses in the village of Krvavica, where the elderly and disabled population was evacuated, while the 110 KW power line from Markovica to Metkovic was shut down temporarily. The Croatian Forestry Commission announced that an area of 700ha had been destroyed by the fire, including some 350ha of pine forest. All roads going between Makarska and Brela have been closed to traffic because of the blaze.
