The U.S. believes Macedonia’s invitation to join NATO should not be deferred over the unresolved name row with Greece. “We believe the decisions that are taken on NATO membership ought to be based on whether the countries meet the qualifications and criteria that NATO has established for them,” U.S. State Department spokesperson Tom Casey told media on Monday. U.S.: Macedonia name no condition for NATO Skopje is facing a Greek veto of its invitation to join NATO at the alliance’s Bucharest summit which gets underway on Wednesday because of the ‘name’ dispute. Athens objects to Skopje’s use of its constitutional name “Republic of Macedonia” claiming it might lead Skopje to make territorial claims over Greece’s own northern province of Macedonia. “There certainly is no plan to delay the NATO summit or delay decisions on membership because of this issue,” Casey stated. Casey reiterated that Washington is encouraging both countries to resolve the issue under United Nations auspices. The upcoming summit has seen a flurry of diplomatic activity to end the dispute once and for all. The two countries have had intense talks under UN and U.S. mediation in order to reach a compromise. Media reported that the last proposed UN offer for a mutually agreed Macedonia name was “Republic of Macedonia (Skopje)” with freedom to both sides to use the adjective “Macedonian” to describe identity. While Greece openly opposed the latest proposal saying it favors their neighbor, Skopje has so far kept silent. Greek media speculate the U.S. is planning to let Macedonia be invited to NATO with the provisional name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia under which it was admitted into the UN due to Greek pressure back in 1993. Greece allegedly opposed this move and asked for Skopje’s invitation to be postponed. The U.S. along with around 120 other countries have recognised Macedonia’s constitutional name.
