6 March 2008 | 12:43 | Source: Beta
TIRANA -- 16 people, including two children, died when their ship sank on lake Farka, near Tirana

The ship, with 20 people on board returning home after celebrating the birthday of 5-year old twins in a restaurant by the lake, sank this morning at around 0100.

The ship, with a capacity of 7 passengers, belonged to a restaurant on the banks of lake Farka, some 10 km east of Tirana, said Albanian police spokeswoman Alma Katragini.

The authorities think the ship capsized and sank because it was overloaded.

Four passengers survived the accident, said Katragini. She stated that the authorities had recovered 16 bodies from the lake by 0300.

Members of two families died in the accident, while two bodies have still not been identified. They are believed to be family friends.
