Italy has warned Greece that it will be isolated if it vetoes Macedonian entry into NATO. President of Italy’s Parliamentary Commission for Foreign Affairs Lamberto Dini, who is visiting the Macedonian parliament as part of a NATO commission, said in Skopje today that “for Italians this country is called the Republic of Macedonia.” Dini in Skopje: This country's name is Macedonia Macedonia and Greece are conducting a dispute in the UN over the use of the name, the Republic of Macedonia. Greece contests the name, saying that it clashes with the name of the country’s own northern region. Dini, a former prime minister and foreign minister, feels that Macedonia’s speedy integration within Euro-Atlantic structures requires the unity of all political parties. The French ambassador to Macedonia, Bernard Valero, believes that Greece and Macedonia have to find a mutually acceptable solution to the problem of Macedonia’s name as soon as possible. Valero voiced his opinion during consultations with Macedonian Foreign Ministry State Secretary Igor Ilievski. Macedonia has asked France to officially make its position clear over the controversy, following the recent visit of Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis. “France supports a solution based on a mutual agreement between the Macedonian and Greek sides, and every proposal with that end in mind is welcome,” said Valero in Skopje. Ten days ago, during Bakoyannis’ visit to Paris, Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki postponed a trip to the French capital to undergo an eye operation.
