Serbia set to get gender equality law
After two years of drafting and an early withdrawal from procedure, Serbia should get a new law on gender equality this fall, Beta has reported.

Serbia set to get gender equality law
Mihajlovic told reporters in Belgrade that the legislation should be presented to the cabinet in the next ten or so days, then to the parliament, and that it could be adopted in regular procedure late in September.The deputy prime minister said that there was agreement and consensus among 25 institutions about this piece of legislation, and they include ministries, agencies and independent bodies, but that there could be an issue with the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans' and Social Affairs, wanting to return the legislation to the beginning and seeking the formation of a new working group.
"I think that's very bad for Serbia. It's a step back, not one, but many steps," Mihajlovic said, voicing the hope that it would not happen.
Speaking on the new law, she said it would be pointless if the law were not enforced, which would be ensured through inspection and fines.
"Fines for individuals and businesses are from RSD 500,000 to 1.5 million," said Mihajlovic, adding that this applied to the private sector too.
She said the law would prohibit photographs being attached to CVs when applying for jobs, or any kind of appearance-based selection.
"It will not be permitted for a prospective employer to ask whether you will have children, if you will get married, when you will get married. That's how it is in all the countries around us," Mihajlovic said.
