Vulin stressed that the German police have not so far contacted their Serbian counterparts with any request, or any information related to the incident.

A driver late on Monday deliberately drove a truck into a crowed of people in a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12.

Reports on Tuesday morning said the attacker was in custody, and identified him as a Pakistani man, a refugee who arrived in Germany via the Balkan route.

However, the German media later in the day quoted an unnamed police official who said that "the wrong man had been arrested" and that the perpetrator was, as of Tuesday afternoon, "armed, and at large."

Responding to journalists' questions in Belgrade today, Vulin also said:

"We are making an effort to register all those (refugees and migrants) who pass through our territory, to have information about them - but you will admit that it is entirely impossible to know what these people's intent is, and what their history is."
