Lavrov was thus recognized for his outstanding contribution to developing and affirming peaceful cooperation and friendly relations between Serbia and Russia.

During the ceremony, Lavrov said the decoration represented a great honor to himself, and to his ministry.

"This order represents a testimony and confirmation that our Serbian friends assign great importance to the foreign policy aspect of our strategic partnership," the Russian minister said.

He added he was particularly glad to receive the accolade from President Nikolic, whom he referred to as "a special friend of Russia," adding that he highly appreciates Nikolic's personal contribution to the friendly Serbia-Russia ties.

"The interests of Serbia and Russia can only benefit when we act together in the international arena," Lavrov remarked.

Before meeting with Nikolic, the Russian minister was received by Serbian PM Aleksandar Vucic.
