"The world has been left without one of the last greats. Fidel Castro is a symbol of a fighter for the freedom, sovereignty and happiness of his people," Nikolic wrote.

"Today, Serbia has one great friend less. Hold your head up, Cuba, and continue on the path at the end of which is happiness," Nikolic wrote.

Vucic's message of condolences

On Saturday, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic sent a telegram of condolences to President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro.

"I was very saddened by the news of the death of Fidel Castro, a longtime leader of the Republic of Cuba. Through his life and work, as one of the greatest world statesman figures of the twentieth century, the history of your country is reflected a lot. His death marks an end of a strong political era," Vucic wrote, according to the government's website, and added:

"Serbia will always highly appreciate the spirit of freedom with which Fidel defended the sovereignty of his country, to return Cuba to Cubans, as he spoke. On behalf of the government of Serbia and my own behalf, I send my sincere condolences to you and the people of Cuba."
