DS leader, alarmed by "news of Russian bases," writes to PM

Pajtic said that Vucic's role requires that the public be informed about the actions and conversations that he is having.

"The only thing the public knows is that, as PM-designate, that is, the outgoing prime minister, you traveled to a sudden meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the topics unknown to any of us," said Pajtic, referring to Vucic's May trip to Moscow.

The leader of the opposition party then stressed that after this meeting, the media "which Serbia knows are under Vucic's control" launched what he said was a relentless campaign against the European Union and the United States, "accusing them of working against the party led by Vucic (SNS)."

"What we do know is that during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, you will sign a series of bilateral agreements, to which you as the prime minister of a caretaker government have no right," said Pajtic.

Pajtic also stated that he was concerned over "media announcements" that "a Russian military base will be built in Serbia, in Zrenjanin, near the Ecka airport."

"You know how much trouble the Serbian-Russian Humanitarian Center in Nis has created for our country, together with the completely unnecessary military parade with the Russian army, and a series of joint military exercises at a time when the European Union introduced sanctions against Russia for its participation in the armed conflict in Ukraine," said Pajtic, as quoted by Beta agency.

According to him, "the idea of building Russian military bases in Serbia is in itself cause for alarm."

"You have not right to (conduct) such a policy, because you did not get the support of citizens of Serbia for that. You never spoke about that before the elections, you never sought support for something like that, on the contrary," Pajtic said, addressing Vucic.

The DS leader added that "citizens expect commitment to European values, the rule of law and modern society, as precisely these values are ignored in scandals such as Savamala and the censorship of the media."

"As president of the DS I ask you to clearly tell citizens whether the news about the building of a Russian base in Serbia is fact or fiction. If it is true, you and your party take the responsibility for all the consequences that will follow from the EU, and they will certainly follow and will be felt by those who are the most vulnerable," the letter said.

Pajtic added that Vucic during the 1990s "stood for anti-European policies that led to much evil, misery and defeat - something he at the time did not feel for himself."

"I hope that experience has thought you something, and that you will not repeat a similar mistake," concluded Pajtic's letter.
