He also "encouraged them to oppose any form of pressure more strongly and in a more organized manner," Tanjug reported.

He urged authorities and everyone else to enable media and journalists to work freely and, in particular, refrain from any attacks against them.

"The ombudsman urges the media and journalists themselves to maintain the highest standards of their profession and always respect the rights of all those they are reporting on," Jankovic said in a statement.

The fundamental element of the freedom of the media is a free journalist, the ombudsman said.

"Serbia has adopted and started implementing a set of media laws that have received good assessments in principle. At national level, public competitions for funding for media projects have also been carried out for the first time with relative success, but this has not been sufficient to enhance the freedom of the media," the ombudsman said.

Instead, media freedoms have regressed, and we have every reason to be concerned as a society, Jankovic said.
