Final election results won't be known until after holidays
The Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) had a confusing day on Wednesday, and finally, after a series of back-to-back meetings, decided to order elections repeated in 15 polling stations where 18,000 Serbians are eligible to vote.The legal deadline to announce election's final results expires at midnight today, but the casting and counting of the 18,000 potential votes will have to wait until after Orthodox Easter and May 1 (Labor Day) holidays in Serbia - non-working days from Friday until Tuesday.
That means elections will most likely be repeated on Wednesday, May 4, with another 96-hour deadline after that to announce the results.
According to the currently accessible results and projections - based on 98.04 percent of the voting material processed by the state commission - SNS, SPS, SRS, DS, and Enough is Enough will have deputies in the next National Assembly, while DSS-Dveri, and SDS-LDP-LSV are very close to the five-percent threshold - so far, above it.
Four electoral lists representing minorities will also have seats.
The final result of the two coalitions can be affected by the 18,000 votes yet to be cast. At the same time, the result from the polling stations that experienced "logistical-administrative errors", i.e., about 2 percent of the original ballots cast, remains unknown.
The commission held meetings until early hours of this morning, deciding on 59 of these polling stations, with 89 remaining to be decided on today.
Tanjug is reporting that RIK verified election results in 46 of these cases, ordered a recount in 12, and annulled one.
At the same time, representatives of almost all parties have been going through election materials at the commission's premises, were numerous sacks, ballots, and boxes are stored. As they are reviewing the materials, mutual accusations are flying from all sides in the form of press releases.
It is worth noting that checks of election materials have no formal purpose, as the deadline to lodge appeals expired on Monday.
