Belgrade eager to see if Zagreb will "politicize issues"

"The important thing is that we did everything necessary to open the chapters and that 27 EU members recognized that," says Jadranka Joksimovic.

Belgrade eager to see if Zagreb will "politicize issues"

"We are very interested to see whether the principle of respect for the realized criteria for chapter opening, or politicization of bilateral issues will prevail with our neighbors," Joksimovic said.

This was her response when asked "whether Croatia can be expected to refrain from blocking the opening of chapter 23 after the latest statements of its foreign minister, who now speaks about conditions for the closing, not the opening of the chapter."

This week the EU will reconsider the question of whether Serbia has met the conditions for the opening of chapter 23, which, along 24, should be opened by the end of June, according to Belgrade's plans.

Croatia, however, has not yet given its approval. According to unofficial information the Serbian government expects Zagreb to abandon the blockade, considering that recent statements of Croatian officials "indicate that the conditions Serbia needs to fulfill on Croatia's demand have been moved to the closing this chapter."

Head of the Serbian negotiating team in EU talks Tanja Miscevic told Belgrade-based daily Danas that after the Orthodox Easter holiday in Serbia (May 1), the Working Party on Enlargement and Countries Negotiating Accession to the EU (COELA) will start meeting, with Serbia's negotiation chapters also on the agenda.

"I do not know whether that means a final decision on the report on fulfillment of the criteria for chapter 23 but I know the conversation on that is continuing," Miscevic said.
