EC to Balkan route countries: Provide reception capacities

Last year, the Balkan countries said they would provide 50,000 places for migrants "in time for the winter," but the EC said "only around half of this figure is currently available or being developed," AP reported.

The same reported noted that "Greece's response to the refugee emergency continues to be too slow" and that it is "not sending enough migrants who do not qualify for asylum back home," while only one specialist team - a so-called "hotspot" - set up to register and fingerprint migrants is currently fully operational.

The document further states that 20,000 migrants have been reported since the start of last year - but that is "still insufficient considering that more than 800,000 arrived in 2015."

EU commissioner in charge of migrations Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Wednesday he has written letters to EU members "with a clear and strong message to accelerate the relocation of refugees from overstretched Greece and Italy," AFP reported.

Avramopoulos "told a press conference he had sent letters to all the interior ministers of the 28-nation bloc after only 497 people were relocated to other member states out of the 160,000 agreed last September," the agency said.
