High concentration of refugees "unlikely" - UNHCR rep

He added it was "too early to say" what the consequences would be for Serbia when it comes to Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz's announcement his country will limit the number of refugees it will accept this year to 37,500.

"It is too early to say, 2,000 refugees pass through Serbia per day, it will take a lot of time before this quota is filled, and at the same time, this has not been made into law. I think that Austria has only requested an opinion. It is early for speculation. I do not think it will have some effect," said Schodder.

Asked whether a plan to distribute 6,000 migrants in Serbia had been discussed with the government here, Schodder replied affirmatively, adding that these talks took place not only with the UNHCR, but also with many other organizations, "and started last summer."

He explained these were "preparations for the winter, so that refugees would not suffer in the cold."

Asked "what kind of spring awaits us - given that the conflict in Syria could bring 600,000 people to the Turkish border" - Schodder said that the Turkish government "made it clear that it will not prevent the entry of people to Turkey."

He added that Anakara has promises of assistance from the international community in order to receive more refugees, "but is already hospitable enough and hosts a large number of refugees."

Schodder concluded by saying the solution was "not in treating the symptoms but the causes of the disease" and that "everyone must work towards peace in Syria and other conflict zones."
