EU denies asking Serbia to permanently settle refugees

Reporting on Tuesday, the EurActiv website cited a briefing given by an unnamed EU official to report that EU's Syria trust fund money would be used to keep refugees in Serbia and Macedonia. The article was later updated to state that "the Syria trust fund, used to help Syrian refugees and overstretched host communities in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq, will also be used to help the migrants who made it to Macedonia and Serbia," quoting a statement made by "an EU official on February 1."

EC spokesperson Maja Koncijancic said that the website "corrected the inaccuracy" published in the report on preparations for a donors' conference in London.

Beta is reporting on Wednesday that European diplomatic sources "stressed that so far in the discussions of the European Commission and the EU institutions with the Serbian government there has only been mention of providing accommodation options for a temporary stay of a small number of refugees, for no loner than a month or two."

Also on Wednesday, the European Commission confirmed that money from the so-called Madad Fund will be used in Serbia and Macedonia "to resolve the issue of the flow of refugees."

In a statement about tomorrow's donor conference to raise additional funds, besides the already available EUR 645 million, the EC "made clear that these funds will be used for long-term care for Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq."

The EC pointed out that "the mandate of the fund's has been expanded in order to act also in the Western Balkans, when it comes to the flow of Syrian refugees."

Officials in the EC pointed out that in a joint statement of senior officials of the EU and Serbia and other Western Balkan countries on October 8, they underlined it had been "suggested that the objectives and the program of the EU fund for regional addressing of the issues of Syrian refugees should be expanded to the Western Balkans, and additional contributions considered."
