Vucic backs Merkel's migrant policy, takes on her critics

"I've heard lately a lot of criticism of Merkel, even insults. It is unfair and wrong. Merkel holds high European values and is searching for a European solution. Many Europeans stretched out their hand when it came to receiving money, and now they do not want to share the cost, which is bad," said Vucic.

He also "asked Merkel's critics what it was they were offering," noting they "certainly will not help, because there is no alternative to her policies."

"I certainly have not heard reasonable proposals," said Vucic.

The prime minister then "stressed that a comprehensive European solution, which Merkel strives towards, is necessary."

Such a solution, he admitted, is difficult to achieve "because not everyone is on the same side, which is necessary in order to achieve it."

Asked whether the refugee crisis could destabilize the countries of the Western Balkans, Vucic replied he was "always concerned about stability in the region," adding that the fact the region remains peaceful was "greatly contributed to by Merkel."

At the same time he pointed out that the Balkans was and remains "a difficult region," one where "the First World War broke out, which must not be forgotten."

"That's why I always have in mind the risk of possible destabilization," said Vucic, noting that during the summer there was "a heated debate" between Serbia and Croatia regarding refugees.

"Precisely Merkel played an important role then in calming the situation," concluded Vucic.
