Analyst: Turkey, not NATO, decided to shoot down plane

"This is the position of Turkey, which is very hard-line toward Russia's activities in the region," he told the Beta agency on Tuesday, and added:

"Turkey is deeply involved in everything that is happening, it is an interested party and not at all innocent in everything taking place, but this - the relationship between Turkey and Islamic State - has been tacitly pushed into the background."

Radic said there was information about Islamic State selling oil "precisely to Turkey" and that this was one of the terrorist organization's most important sources of financing.

"(Turks) have been dissatisfied since the start of the Russian engagement and said they would not tolerate violations of their airspace, even if they were technical in nature, due to weather conditions or during landings. Now Turkey has decided to show its teeth and a lack of good will toward the engagement of Russia's Air Force."

This analyst noted that during the Cold War the Soviet Union "shot down a good number of U.S. and allied planes flying reconnaissance missions - but those were different conditions and it was happening at the height of the Cold War."

Radic thinks this incident "should not have dramatic consequences, as Russians will continue to perform their tasks."

"There will be stormy diplomatic and media punches, but there will no change of the situation on the ground. Russians will continue to do their thing, while Turkey has shown just how negative its stance on that is," he concluded.

Earlier on Tuesday, Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber claiming it had violated its airspace and ignored repeated warnings, while Russia denied that the plane crossed the Syrian border.
