Patriarch on Kosovo: We must respond to force

Speaking as the UNESCO's General Conference meeting in Paris, he added:

"I hope we won't have the opportunity to defend ourselves in that way, and that instead the awareness and conscience of those who are deciding on our destiny will speak in the way awakened and clear human conscience should."

"It is now about our holy places being taken away and declared the holy places of Kosovo," the patriarch said while visiting the Diocese of Nis in southern Serbia.

He noted that Serbian holy sites, our history, our culture, the beginning of all that is great and important in our history and culture, is located in Kosovo and Metohija.

"We cannot allow it either to ourselves or to anyone else under any circumstances, for Kosovo and Metohija not to be a part of the people to whom it has belonged since there has been Kosovo and Metohija and the Serbian people," Irinej said.

The head of the SPC added that the Serb heritage is now supposed to be entrusted to a people, i.e., Albanians, "who during the entire course of their history set our holy places on fire."

"We must not allow this," he said.

Irinej also reminded that the residence of the Serbian Orthodox patriarchs (the Patriarchate of Pec) is located in Kosovo, "as well as the holiest sites of our history and culture."
