Police clampdown on refugee smugglers ends
Kostana 2015, an operation conducted by the police forces of seven countries on the Presevo-Tabanovci border crossing between Serbia and Macedonia, has produced good results in confronting people smugglers, the participants of the operation said after it ended on Wednesday.The operation, which involved the Austrian, Slovenian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, Albanian and Macedonian police forces, was conducted along the section of the border towards Macedonia, with interviews held with migrants in the Presevo area.
Mitar Djuraskovic, who heads the Serbian police department for curbing trans-border crime, said that the objective of the operation was to gather information on crime groups smuggling people from Turkey to Greece and to disrupt similar channels in Serbia.
During the operation, a criminal charge was filed against a Serbian national who had been smuggling eight Syrian nationals, and 100 interviews were held with irregular migrants, mostly Syrians, Djuraskovic said.
The operation was organised pursuant to the agenda of the Border Security Programme of the DCAF, a centre for security, development and rule of law, in collaboration with the Serbian Border Police Administration.
Experience-sharing among police forces is also a result of the operation, and it is a significant element for establishing channels for exchanging information, DCAF Director Anton Travner said at a press conference.
One of the channels was established at the level between the Serbian Interior Ministry and Europol, he said.
