Vucic: Elections only if they are in Serbia's interests

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said Tuesday that he would take a decision to hold parliamentary elections only if they proved to be in accordance with the interests of Serbia and not based on personal, party or any other interests.

Answering journalists' questions about whether parliamentary elections will be called if the forthcoming European Commission's EU accession progress report on Serbia is favorable, Vucic said that a decision on holding the elections was not to be made based on daily political interests.

"I will make the decision in accordance with the interests of Serbia, rather than to suit the political interests of the SNS (Serbian Progressive Party) or any other party, or someone's personal interests, or based on an event dominating public attention at a given moment. It does not interest me," said Vucic.

Asked about his expectations from the progress report, Vucic said that the Serbian government had been working hard and he believed that the result would be positive and that the first negotiating chapters would be opened before the end of the current year.

"I believe that it will be a good, fair and very positive report," said Vucic.
