Hungary and Serbia exchange "notes" amid border chaos
A statement from the MFA said that Serbia would send "a note to Hungary calling on Hungarian organs to prevent a repeat of the situation that happened today when teargas canisters were fired into our territory."The statement added that Serbian and Hungarian foreign ministers "maintain intensive communication in order to resolve the existing situation at Horgos."
Earlier in the day, Hungary sent a note to Serbia asking the country to prevent armed migrants from crossing the state border at Horgos.
Hungary has shut down its border with Serbia creating a bottleneck for refugees who are escaping violence in their countries, Tanjug reported.
B92's reporter at the scene said on Wednesday evening that about 20 Serbian policemen had taken position between the refugees and the Hungarian police, and were "attempting to persuade the refugees not to approach the Hungarian police in order to avoid new clashes."
The refugees "greeted the Serbian policemen with applause, and many even approached them to kiss them," our reporter said.
Serbian Labor and Social Affairs Minister Aleksandar Vulin was also at the border this evening, "persuading the refugees not to clash with the Hungarian police."
At around 15:00 CET, refugees from the Middle East broke through a fence at Horgos 2, and then clashed with the Hungarian police.
The police used tear gas and water cannons, while the refugees set tires on fire and pelted the officers with stones.
