There are about 2,300 people in the camp, located near the border with Serbia. Previously, the refugees threatened to break through the fence unless their demands were met "in two hours." It was unclear what these demands were.

The police said they would try to find a peaceful solution, and provided no other details - except that the part of the highway leading to the border with Serbia has been temporarily closed, with vehicles rerouted to another road.

In Budapest, more than 1,000 refugees who have been stranded at the main train station for days started walking toward the Austrian border - about 175 kilometers away, AFP reported on Friday.

Hungary has announced that 150,611 refugees applied for asylum in that country so far this year, 50,413 among them Syrians.

On Friday morning, refugees protested at the train station in the town of Bicske, where a train they boarded in Budapest was stopped on Thursday. They said they "want to go to Germany, not to a refugee camp."

According to reports quoting the police, they are offering "passive resistance" and refusing to be transported to a reception center.

Meanwhile, Hungarian MPs adopted with a large majority of votes a package of amendments to laws on migration and border protection. Under the new legislation, crossing and damaging the border fence is a criminal act, while illegally crossing the border will bring a maximum jail sentence of three years, Reuters reported.
