The chair of the Serbian Assembly's Committee on Defense and Security has said that "a center for 400,000 asylum seekers could soon spring up in Serbia."

But Momir Stojanovic, the committee's chair from the ranks of the ruling SNS, said that "since the EU has no solution for the huge migrant problem, one of the possibilities is to finance a big center for migrants."

"It is speculated that the EU wishes to build such a center somewhere in the Balkans, and that chances are great it will be in Serbia. It is also being said that the center could be located somewhere in southern Serbia and that this asylum seeker city would most likely be of the prefabricated type," Stojanovic told the paper.

At the same time, he stressed that "Serbia should not consent to this":

"I hope there will be no pressure on us to consent to the building of such a center, because if only a fifth of those people were to remain in Serbia, that would be a big economic and security problem."

Aleksandar Vulin, on the other hand, said that Serbia "has no capacities for such a thing, nor would it enter into a project like that."

"We are fulfilling our international obligations toward asylum seekers and toward persons who arrive from the readmission. Serbia is not building any permanent centers to accommodate migrants and will not be building them ," the minister said.

Vulin's deputy in the Working Group for Migrations, Nenad Ivanisevic, told the daily that "only the government of Serbia can plan to build such a center" and that it "never discussed it."

"Our idea is to create several points where these people will be offered assistance, as is already being done in Subotica, Kanjiza, Presevo," he said.

The newspaper said that more than 1,000 migrants arrive in Serbia every day, passing through five centers for asylum seekers, while the latest estimate is that there are now 70,000 migrants in the country.
