The Serbian parliament elected on Wednesday Brankica Jankovic as Commissioner for Protection of Equality.

Serbia has new commissioner for protection of equality

Jankovic received 151 votes from MPs of the ruling coalition.

In the previous government, Jankovic was state secretary at the labor ministry and head of the negotiating group 19 dealing with social policy and employment in SAA talks with the EU. She was at the helm of the Gerontology Center Belgrade for seven years.

The five-year term of office of her predecessor Nevena Petrusic, who was elected to the office on the proposal of the Democratic Party, expired on May 5.

The commissioner is chosen by a majority of MPs, on the recommendation of the Committee on Constitutional and Legislative Issues, and any parliamentary group can give its proposal.

The commissioner is chosen for a five-year term of office, and the same person can be elected to the same position twice at the most.
