"The EU now wants Serbia, which is not an EU member, to also join the sanctions. Serbia is in fact being blackmailed - 'Serbia will join the sanctions against Russia, or we will not consider you a state that has a chance to join the EU'," he told a news conference on Thursday.

According to him, the problem Serbia is facing is that it will not become a member of the EU in the near near future.

"If they go down the path of introducing sanction against Russia now, they will only bow down to blackmail, but nobody will let them join the EU in a year because of that," Pushkov said, the Russian news agency TASS reported.

Also on Thursday, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić was meeting in Belgrade with EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn when he once again reiterated that membership in the EU was the country's strategic goal, but that Serbia would not impose sanctions on Russia.
