Serbia’s Military Security Agency (VBA) is currently working to shed some light on certain foreign intelligence services’ espionage activities.

Cvetković said that the foreign intelligence services were showing unabated interest in the defense system of Serbia, and the VBA was continuously registering certain indicators of their activity and intelligence workings against members of the Ministry of Defense and the VS.“In the focus of interest of the foreign intelligence services have been the implementation of the Brussels agreement, our units’ involvement in the Ground Safety Zone, plans for equipping and modernizing the army with modern weapons and equipment from abroad, the capacity of the defense industry, the security situation in the potential crisis areas, the workings of the Islamic factor, and the foreign policy orientation of our country,” said Cvetković.
He pointed out that one of the primary activities of the VBA was countering foreign intelligence services’ workings.
Right now, the VBA is following certain clues and information pointing to serious threats to members of the Ministry of Defense and the VS that were coming from workings carried out by foreign intelligence services, Cvetković said.
He stated that the VBA, in cooperation with related services and the competent prosecutor's office, successfully handled two cases of abuse of official position in the current year.
“The first was related to the area of procurement of weapons and military equipment, and the other to the area of selling surplus weapons and military equipment. We filed criminal charges against nine persons relevant to these cases and the legal proceedings are ongoing,” said Cvetković.
Cvetković said that measures had been taken to bring to completion two more cases with elements of corruption that could not end due to a strike of lawyers that had been taking place for more than two months now.
