EU to carefully monitor results of Putin's visit

The same sources "explained that it all depends on what will be the outcome of Putin's visit - whether there will be talk about the South Stream gas pipeline, which EU officials have repeatedly said must comply with European laws, as well as that political conditions must be achieved related to the Ukrainian crisis and EU's relations with Russia."

The agency reported that this was something the incoming EU High Representative Federica Mogherini pointed out to on Monday in the European parliament, while it was "also noted that the EU applied strict rules toward its member Bulgaria when it comes to the construction of South Stream."

Diplomatic sources in Brussels added that it is considered that Russian economic, political, and security influence on Western Balkan countries poses a threat because, as they put it, "few countries gained freedom and democracy from Russia."

Belarus and Kazakhstan have close ties with Russia, and the sources described these countries as "not being the embodiment of democracy and fundamental freedoms."

The agency further quoted its sources as saying they believed the results of Putin's visit to Serbia, if they went at the expense of the cooperation between Belgrade and the EU, could have influence on the course of Serbia's membership negotiations.
