Lawyers across Serbia go on strike

Disgruntled because increase in lump sum taxes, and because of specific provisions of the Law on Public Notaries, Belgrade-based lawyers went on strike once again a week ago and are now joined by lawyers across the country who followed a decision made by the Bar Association of Serbia.

For the same reason, the lawyers in the capital went on a 15-day strike from June 18 to July 2 and were joined for three days by lawyers across Serbia.

Representatives of the profession on Tuesday resumed discussions with the ministries of finance and justice as part of a task force.

It was agreed that the lawyers submit to the task force a written proposal of a solution to the problem on Wednesday, with the next meeting scheduled for Monday, September 22.

The Beta news agency is reporting that the Bar Association is also demanding that Justice Minister Nikola Selaković be sacked because of the failed justice system reform and proposed legislation described as unconstitutional, but also because he "failed to live up to the promise given to lawyers that they would not be discriminated against in favor of public notaries."
