Elections for national minority councils called
Members of 17 national minorities in Serbia will be able to elect their national councils by direct voting. The Russian and the Turkish minority will not organize national council elections.The Gorani community said earlier that that they "do not consider themselves a national minority because their only country is the Republic of Serbia," adding that they "have no other homeland, nor do they want to look for any other country to call their home."
Udovički said that the Polish, Montenegrin, Macedonian and Croat communities will be able to elect their national councils via electronic assembly.
She underscored that a sufficient number of the Roma have been entered into a separate electoral roll so they will also be able to appoint their national council through direct elections.
The special electoral rolls were temporarily closed on Saturday at midnight, when the authorities were supposed to decide whether the minorities would be electing their councils through direct elections or via electronic assembly.
In order for a national community to achieve the right to organize direct elections, the separate electoral roll has to include at least 40 percent of all individuals who declared themselves as members of the national minority in the 2011 census.
After the elections for national minority councils are called, special electoral rolls will re-open for further registry, and will be closed 72 hours before the minority council elections begin.
