FM denies Serbia has candidate for top UN job

His comments came after the Belgrade-based daily Blic reported that "a medallion" was put up at the UN headquarters in New York with Jeremić's name, and the text, "candidate of Serbia," and "years of mandate 2017-2022."

Jeremić is Serbia's former foreign minister who previously served as president of the United Nations General Assembly. The report speculates that he is now a candidate for the next UN secretary-general.

Dačić specified that he spoke with Jeremić about his plans, but that no decision was made regarding the UN bid, "and it is not planned to make it now."

The paper then quoted a foreign diplomat who said that Jeremić's candidature would be vetoed by western Security Council members - the U.S., Britain, and France.

According to the same source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the former Serbian official could count on the support of Russia and China and also "some Latin American and African countries."
