Serbia, Macedonia recognize driving licenses

The interior ministers of Serbia and Macedonia signed an agreement on the mutual recognition of driving licenses between the two governments.

Serbia, Macedonia recognize driving licenses

“This agreement tackles an everyday issue, and will enable citizens to cross the border between the two countries without some special procedures,“ Stefanović told a news conference after meeting his Macedonian counterpart at the Palace of Serbia.

Stefanović said that the Serbian government will adopt the document, and voiced expectation that the Serbian parliament would ratify it soon after that.

He noted that Serbia and Macedonia have good police cooperation, taking tough measures to counter illegal migration and drug trafficking.

Jankuloska said that the agreement is of concrete significance for both countries, especially given the fact that many Serbian citizens go across Macedonia when heading to some tourist destinations.

She said that the police cooperation between the two countries is an excellent example of regional cooperation, noting that it is necessary in many fields, taking into account the challenges relating to various crimes that the region has to respond to.

Stefanović thanked his Macedonian counterpart for the aid that Skopje gave to our Serbia during the May floods, noting that the country sent 40 rescuers, boats and one helicopter, and considerable financial assistance.

“This illustrates huge solidarity of the people and the readiness of the two countries to collaborate in difficult situations,” he noted.

Serbia has so far concluded the bilateral agreements on the mutual recognition of driving licenses with Spain and Italy.

There are also some initiatives for negotiating this agreement with Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Australia, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and several other countries.

Serbian citizens would particularly look forward to this kind of arrangement with Austria, Germany and France, where most temporary workers go to.

Besides the national driving license, Serbian citizens have also to obtain an international license in Germany, in France an international license is required, while for the entry and transit through Austria no international license is needed.
