Serbia "will adjust its foreign policy to EU"

Jadranka Joksimović said on Thursday that Serbia will have to increasingly align its foreign policy with the EU as it continues to make progress on its EU path.

Serbia "will adjust its foreign policy to EU"

"We need to adjust (our foreign policy) and this is indisputable, we are not trying to avoid it at any point and we cannot avoid it,” Joksimović told Tanjug.

Joksimović announced that she would attend the explanatory screening on Chapter 31 in Brussels on July 15 which covers foreign and security policy of the EU, noting that Serbia wants to demonstrate that it appreciates the importance of the chapter and policy alignments.

Referring to the crisis in Ukraine, Joksimović noted that Brussels policy is not consistent to the very end either.

Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia Michael Davenport stated earlier that as a candidate for EU membership, Serbia should gradually align its foreign policy positions with those of the EU.

Commenting on the recent visits of Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić to Berlin and Paris, Joksimović underscored that on these occasions, the prime minister promoted a responsible, serious and rather well-balanced foreign policy.

“The high shuttle diplomacy by Prime Minister Vučić," she said, "is very important and shows the way in which we appreciate our EU path, while on the other hand it shows our wish to strengthen bilateral relations and present our commitment to the EU and win their support for our EU path."

Concerning the recent visit of the Serbian PM to Russia, Joksimović said that the country is "a rational and inevitable element of Serbia's foreign policy."

"Serbia's strategic goal concerning EU membership is not hindered by cooperation with Russia because a majority of European countries also share economic ties with Russia and are trying to improve their cooperation in the energy sector and infrastructure projects with the country," Joksimović said.
