Nikolić "would be glad to welcome pope"

Speaking on the issue of nationalized property that belonged to religious communities before the Second World War, Nikolić said that "Serbia would make restitution as fast and as efficiently as possible, in accordance with the law and the country's abilities."

Nikolić has sent a letter of gratitude to Pope Francis for his direct aid to Serbia in the wake of the devastating floods that hit the country in the second half of May.

Regarding Francis' possible visit to Serbia, Nikolić was also quoted as saying that he would be "glad to welcome the head of the Roman Catholic Church as soon as an agreement on the matter was reached with the Serbian Orthodox Church."

The statement added that Nikolić "expressed his desire that, through joint wisdom, no step is made that would offend anyone, especially regarding the stance towards history, the Second World War, and the role of (Croatian Catholic Cardinal) Alojzije Stepinac in it."

The Catholic Church plans to canonize Stepinac, who was after the war found guilty of collaboration with the fascist Ustasha regime of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH).
