State of emergency remains in Obrenovac

The prime minister told reporters that this Belgrade municipality would remain in the current regime so that the army can distribute aid, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić has told residents of Obrenovac, according to Tanjug.

Speaking at the session of a local emergency HQ, he "expressed the belief that the government bodies have done a very important share of work as 13,655 tons of waste, out of the total 17,000 tons of waste material, were removed from Obrenovac in the third stage of damage repair alone. "

Vučić said that the Serbian government is implementing all other necessary measures so that life in Obrenovac can be expected to normalize in the next few days.

Obrenovac citizens whose homes were damaged in the floods will be granted extensive government assistance, Vučić said and specified that 92 houses were completely destroyed in the floods while 161 residential buildings are uninhabitable. He added that it has been agreed that another 253 housing units should be rebuilt before winter 2014.

The government will provide substantial assistance to all those whose homes have been flooded, Vučić noted and added that seeds would be distributed the farming areas of Obrenovac." The compensation for livestock will also be provided and although the government cannot fully make up for all the damages, it will do its best to help," Vučić said.

The biggest problem in Obrenovac was the interruption of the economic activities, he said and noted that the talks with banks will focus on subsidized loans with a view to helping the companies in the area.

Special efforts are being invested with the aim of providing fresh supplies of drinking water to Obrenovac as soon as possible because all of the 21 wells from which Obrenovac citizens draw water were flooded, he said.

The meeting in Obrenovac on Monday was attended by Serbian Defense Minister Bratislav Gašić, Minister of Economy Dušan Vujović, Belgrade Mayor Siniša Mali, army chief Ljubiša Diković, and Obrenovac Mayor Miroslav Čučković.
