EU wants Serbia to support its view on Ukraine

"I think that the Serbian government wants to see a deescalation of the situation. Efforts are moving in this direction and we, of course, want Serbia to support this united position of the EU as far as Ukraine is concerned."

Asked by reporters whether that means continuing pressure on Serbia to "take a clear stance" on the Ukrainian crisis, Davenport said that was "not the issue."

"This is about serious concern over the current situation and about finding a way to resolve it that would protect Ukraine's territorial integrity," he explained.

The EU diplomat said that he on Friday once again conveyed to Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkić the EU's "united position on the Ukraine crisis," and the opinion that the position of Russia towards Crimea was "not acceptable."

When reporters noted that EU's position may not be entirely united, considering that Germany has said it believes that economic sanctions may not be the solution, and that it had understanding for the balanced position of Serbia, Davenport said that the stance of Brussels was united, and that it was a week ago expressed by the European Council.

Speaking earlier this week, Serbia's future prime minister, Aleksandar Vučić, said that the country's position regarding the crisis was clear - it would never impose sanctions on Russia, "but will always respect the territorial integrity of all countries that are members of the United Nations."
