"It is certain that in the next few days I will visit the Ivanović family, to provide at least the moral support and legal advice and help as much as I can."

Fila also stressed that the government in Belgrade "has done everything in its power to help the leader of the Civic Initiative SDP."

"Belgrade has done its part, all it could, starting with giving guarantees for the release Ivanović and other Serb detainees. Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dačić discussed the case of Oliver Ivanović in Brussels and New York, as did Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić.

"Unfortunately, little is in our hands and we can only hope that justice will be satisfied," said Fila.

He added that the support he would provide to Ivanović and his family did not mean he was taking over the case.

EULEX prosecutors sought to extend the detention Ivanović, and a decision must be be made by midnight on Thursday. Ivanović was arrested a month ago on charges of allegedly committing war and other crimes in Kosovo in 1999 and 2000.
