"By my visit to Sochi for the opening of the Winter Olympic Games I wish to pledge support to world peace, which is symbolized by the Olympic Games, and to the general fight against terrorism - now mostly waged by Russia - as a great evil of modern humanity", Nikolić was quoted as saying during his meeting today with Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Chepurin.

The president added that "the treatment of Serbia by the countries of the world has changed significantly over the past two years and that many old friendships that had been neglected for no reason have been renewed," also expressing hope that he will be able to confer with leaders of many friendly countries in Sochi.

Chepurin thanked Nikolić for his plan to attend the opening ceremony, adding that the Sochi Olympics are an exceptionally significant event for the Russian Federation, the statement also said.

Around 60 heads of state are expected to attend the ceremony in Sochi, which is much more than usual, the Russian ambassador said.
