BELGRADE President Tomislav Nikolic warned late on Tuesday that "information is leaking and that someone is notifying drug lords about police actions in advance." He called on the Ministry of Interior (MUP) and the Criminal Investigations Police Department (UKP) to carry out the fight against drug traffickers in a better and more efficient way. President: Information leaking from Interior Ministry “I call on MUP, and especially UKP, to conduct the fight against drug smugglers in a better and more efficient way and with top-class confidentiality so as to ensure tangible results. It is obvious that information is leaking and that someone is notifying drug lords in advance about police actions, and this gives them enough time to remove evidence of involvement in the organisation of drug trafficking activities,” Nikolic said in a statement for the media. Commenting on the report on Operation Grom ("thunderbolt") 2, the president noted that the repeated action failed to produce results which Serbian citizens rightfully expect to see in the fight against narcotics trafficking and drug lords involved in smuggling activities who seem to get away unpunished. “The biggest drug lords were either not found at locations available to the police or they did not have quantities large enough to serve as grounds for police to remand them in detention,” Nikolic said and added it is obvious that a large number of suspects were tipped off about the police action. “I believe that all future actions will produce the same results if they are carried out in the same way,” Nikolic said. He noted that the action should have been carried out in a way similar to the arrest of suspects in the murder of journalist Slavko Curuvija when few individuals with top responsibilities in the government and Interior Ministry were informed about the action and were aware of their duties concerning information protection. On Monday, the police searched 28 locations in Belgrade and another 17 locations in Novi Sad, and eight persons were arrested in each city. In the searches, drugs, weapons and radio communication systems were found, as well as other items associated with criminal acts. During Operation Grom 1, conducted in the territory of entire Serbia in December, the police arrested 128 suspected drug dealers and seized 21 kilograms of drugs, 250 rifles, several pistols, EUR 74,000 worth of cash and six vehicles obtained through drug smuggling activities.
