BELGRADE Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic on Friday scheduled the holding of early local elections for the city assembly in Belgrade. Elections will be held in Negotin and Pecinac on the same day, March 16. Speaker schedules early local elections in Belgrade The campaign will last 45 days. Election activities will commence starting on January 29. Elections will be held in Belgrade's 17 municipalities, where 1,576,795 citizens were eligible to vote in 2012. The mayor will be elected by the assembly, from the ranks of the 110 councilors. Since November, the Provisional Council, with Sinisa Mali as its president, has been managing the capital city. The council was formed after the city assembly on September 24 dismissed Mayor Dragan Djilas. Belgraders will not elect the mayor directly, but will vote for party lists instead. Nevertheless, DS leader Djilas announced he would once again be a candidate for mayor. Yesterday, it was confirmed that Transport Minister Aleksandar Antic will be the candidate of the SPS.
