BELGRADE In 2014, Serbia should get a new set of media laws - on public information, public media services and electronic media. This was announced by Assistant Minister of Culture and Information Sasa Mirkovic. New media laws announced for 2014 Addressing ANEM's roundtable on the media scene, Mirkovic said that a positive comment on the draft law on public information was received on Monday from the Ministry of Foreign and Internal Trade and Telecommunications. Comments from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Justice and the Secretariat for Legislation are still pending, after which a final opinion is to be requested from Brussels through the Serbian government's Office for European Integrations, he said. The sooner the opinions are received, the sooner the draft law will be presented to the government, and a bill tabled to the parliament, Mirkovic said. Mirkovic added that expedited efforts are being made to work out the draft laws on public media services and electronic media. The intention is to send those before the New Year to about a dozen addresses for consideration, so that the responses can arrive immediately after the holiday season, he said. Commenting on Chapter 10 of Serbia's EU accession talks, which is also related to the media and information society, Mirkovic said that the first screening is scheduled to take place in May, with a bilateral screening slated for July. He expressed hope that the screening process will include all three of the new laws. Mirkovic recalled that a competition is now open for projects to be funded by the Ministry of Culture and Information in 2014, adding that he expects project-based funding to become the predominant concept in 2015.
