BELGRADE There are 2,900 judges in Serbia, and one of the most important tasks of the High Judicial Council is to determine if they are successful and do their job well. This is according to VSS Deputy President Miroljub Tomic, who spoke on Wednesday. "Responsibility principle to be introduced in judiciary" At the end of the parliamentary debate on the VSS proposals for the appointment of court presidents, Tomic said that it is necessary to introduce the principle of responsibility into the Serbian justice system. Despite the current number of judges, the total number of judges needed in all courts has not been reached yet, he said. Speaking about the candidates, Tomic said that Dragomir Milojevic, who has been proposed as president of the High Court of Cassation, is an expert and respectable judge. Tomic underlined that the main task is to make the justice system more efficient, professional, transparent and responsible. Tomic said that the process of proposing candidates was transparent, and underlined that this body will adhere to the principle in the coming period. He explained that the VSS has proposed candidates for presidents of several courts in order to end the status of acting court presidents. The VSS proposed that judge Jelena Ivanovic should be appointed president of the Administrative Court. VSS proposed that Miroslav Nikolic should be appointed president of the Commercial Appellate Court. The institution also proposed that judge Zoran Pasalic of the High Misdemeanor Court should be appointed the court's president, while judge Dusko Milenkovic should be appointed president of the Belgrade Appellate Court. The VSS proposed that Dragan Jocic should be appointed president of the Nis Appellate Court who so far held office as judge of the High Court of Cassation, and that judge Dubravka Damjanovic should be appointed president of the Kragujevac Appellate Court. Parliament also discussed the proposition to appoint 11 judges for their first mandate, so as to fill the vacant judicial positions and ensure efficient work of the Administrative Court and commercial courts.
